Gabriel Lavin, Ph.D.

Gabe (Gabriel) is an American musician and scholar based in Brooklyn, NY. For the last 14 years he has performed throughout the Arab world and the United States with ensembles such as Naseer Shamma’s oud orchestra, the Los Angeles Arab Orchestra, the New York Arabic Orchestra, the Oman Oud Association, the Layali Ensemble, and Jihad A. Racy’s Near East Ensemble at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). In August 2024, he received a degree in oud performance and teaching from the Bait Al Oud Conservatory in Abu Dhabi under the guidance of oud master Pr. Sherine Tohamy. He has also studied at Bait Al Oud in Cairo and with the Oman Oud Association in Muscat. To find out and hear more, check out the “Music” and “Media” tabs.

Gabe was a recipient of the Fulbright Scholarship to study oud in Oman during 2014-2015, and before that studied Arabic living for a year in Morocco and a year in Egypt. He later received his Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from UCLA in 2023. His research focuses on music, Indian Ocean exchange, cultural history, media, and early recording industries throughout the Arabian Peninsula.
