Arabian Passings in Indian Ocean History: Troubadours, Technology and the Longue Durée, 1656-1963 (2023)

Abstract:

This chapter from the anticipated edited volume, Sounding the Indian Ocean (2023, UC Press), explores the possibilities and limits of framing historic musical and poetic production in the Arabian Peninsula as a product of the Indian Ocean's longue durée. By doing so through Arabic primary sources, the chapter comprises a micro-historical survey of change and continuity in the circulation of people, texts, and early media technologies from the early modern period to the twentieth century.
